Dr Michael Kimber is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist with extensive experience treating a large range of problems and disorders including anxiety, depression, personality disorders and somatisation disorders. He has experience with adults and adolescents.

Dr Kimber completed a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) at the University of Otago in NZ. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) following psychiatry training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Alfred Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital, Orygen and Headspace. He has also completed a Masters of Psychiatry (MPsych) at Melbourne University.

During his training Dr Kimber worked for a number of years with other medical specialties such as general medicine, neurology and gastroenterology in a range of hospitals in Melbourne. He has a particular interest in physical symptoms caused by emotional or psychological problems such as somatisation disorders and functional somatic syndromes, for example Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Dr Kimber provides an advanced model of psychotherapy called Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). This psychotherapy is very flexible to patients’ individual needs, and is therefore able to help a more comprehensive range of patients compared to many other forms of therapy. ISTDP emphasises efficiency so that patients improve as quickly as possible, and also focuses on the experience of emotions in the body. This therapy can be particularly effective for treatment resistant disorders that have not responded to other treatments or therapies.
